The Rotary theme for the month of September is Basic Education and Literacy. According to the National Literacy Institute, 21% of adults in the United States are considered illiterate. This impacts their ability to not only read and understand printed material but to also communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Education and literacy contribute to personal growth and development, economic growth and development, and provide various social benefits.
As we think about service projects that our clubs can work on this month, try to focus on those that will make an impact on education and literacy. Many clubs in our District participated in the mini library project a few years ago and still maintain mini libraries throughout their communities today. Some of our clubs go into local schools and read to the children as an ongoing service to their community. Our District is participating in this month's theme by encouraging attendees at the Zone Institute and Training to bring a brand new book for children ages birth to 18 that can be placed in the library at the new campus for Child Advocates of San Antonio. In addition to donating a book, attendees will be asked to write an encouraging note to be placed inside each book.
