San Marcos Rotary received a $2,500 District Grant to help the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance (SMGA) build and maintain 30 miles of interconnected nature trails in the city. SMGA used the grant and matching $2,500 to purchase attachments for a Bobcat Skid Steer, including an adaptor plate to make the machine more functional.
SMGA’s current trail project, where the Skid Steer is already in use, will connect the low income and underserved Dunbar neighborhood of San Marcos with an existing nature area andthe city’s river parks. This collaborative effort also involves the City of San Marcos and the San Marcos River Foundation.
A 9” auger purchased with the grant has been used to drill holes for posts along the new trail. In the future, when the crew works in more rocky locations, the auger will allow them to dig holes in the famously hard hill country limestone rock and caliche to facilitate trail construction and repair, build kiosks at the trail heads, plant trees, and add fencing and sign posts where needed.
