District Governor Elect, Craig Hardy, was recently sent a letter of gratitude from the South Texas Blood & Tissue organization for reaching the donor milestone of 8 gallons.
Craig is a designated Heroes in Arms® donor. Heroes in Arms® donors provide specially screened type O-positive blood to emergency teams to transfuse patients at the scene of an accident, in route to the hospital, or in an emergency room. The program has led to a 48% decrease in deaths from traumatic injuries, saving hundreds of patients each year.
Craig encourages all Rotarians to consider giving the Gift of Life to others and shared some of the Benefits of donating blood.
Blood donors can experience several benefits. These include:
- Saving lives: A single donation can save up to three lives.
- Burning calories: According to a 2010 article, giving blood can burn up to 650 calories Trusted Source per donation.
- Reducing high blood pressure: According to a 2016 study Trusted Source, donating blood can help reduce hypertension.
