The Fabra Early Act (EA) Club received a grant from HEB for $12,000 to plant trees on their campus. The trees will provide a buffer from the traffic noise from Interstate 10 when the students are on the playground while enhancing the beauty of the campus. This project was managed and coordinated by Naomi Jendrusch who is the on campus EA sponsor and member of the Boerne Rotary Club.
Fabra Elementary was asked by the Fair Oaks H-E-B to participate in their Earth Day project. This project was to collect as many plastic bags as the school possibly could. Last year, Fabra Elementary collected over 70,000 plastic bags for the new H-E-B in Fair Oaks. The school continues to collect plastic bags for H-E-B all year. This year Fabra is participating in the competition again, but will not come close to what was collected last year.
Texan by Nature is a nonprofit group that works with HEB to facilitate all tree planting projects across the State of Texas. Texan by Nature works with the Texas A&M Forest Service to make sure the trees selected for each area are native. They also facilitate the planting process and educate the children on how to plant trees correctly.
H-E-B plans for this to be an ongoing process throughout the years. They have currently planted over 200,000 trees in the state of Texas. Majority of these trees have been planted at public schools. They partnered with Brightview landscaping to help install the irrigation system on the campus for the trees. Jason Lochte of Cooper and Lochte Landscape Architects in San Antonio has executed tree planting projects with several school districts in the area. Jason has nieces that attend Fabra Elementary School and his children go to Currington Elementary School which is also in the school district. They just recently completed a project for Boerne High School in the courtyard.
Boerne Independent School District Superintendent, Dr. Kristin Craft, was joined by several of the school board members who planted trees alongside the Fabra Early Act Club members. Rotarians from the Boerne Rotary Club and the Boerne Sunrise Rotary Club also planted trees with the students. These Rotary 1 clubs co-sponsor the Early Act Club at Fabra. Last year, both clubs participated with the Early Act club to plant native flowers in the school’s courtyard.
