At a recent Friday noon regular meeting of the Rotary Club of San Angelo, the winners of the annual Fire Safety poster contest were recognized. This project is the longest continual project of the Club, and has been running for over 50 years.
This project is a partnership between the San Angelo Fire marshal’s office and the club. Each year a subject dealing with fire safety is developed on a national basis. This year, the theme was Lithium-Ion battery safety. Students in the third, fourth, and fifth grade participated to produce posters explaining the theme. The teachers in the grades used the theme as a part of their teaching curriculum for science, allowing student’s time to research the theme and develop their own individual poster. Winners were announced during the meeting for places first through fourth and the winners were presented with a plaque and ribbon indicating their award. Each student was recognized and given time to explain their poster in front of the membership. Families of each student were invited and parents, siblings, teachers and administrators attended to show support for the students. The posters were then displayed at the board meeting for the San Angelo Independent school board meeting.
A couple of interesting side notes were a parent who was a winner when they were in elementary and a grandfather of a winner told us that his son was also a winner when he was in elementary as well.
When one thinks of the past fifty years of this project, it’s amazing at the numbers of students that have participated in helping to spread the message of fire safety to their families thereby providing a safer home.
