Rotarians in Seguin have a long history of providing community grants within Guadalupe county. Normally through fund raising, the club awards 10 to 12 grants per year. It is indeed a tradition, that the Grants Committee and Club Members strive to focus on, year after year.
In 2015, Seguin Rotarians found an additional need of community support outside of traditional community boundaries. The Tepehua Centro Comunitario is located in the Jalisco province of Mexico. The Comunitario serves one of the poorest barrios in Mexico which is primarily made up of indigenous Indians. The Comunitario opened in 2010 by a small group that saw the need for helping people in extreme poverty that deal with issues of poor health, including high rates of juvenile diabetes, lack of clean drinking water, sanitation issues, crime and lack of education. Traveling to Tepehua, Seguin Rotarians witnessed the problems and the good programs the Tepehua Comunitario were doing to confront the issues with sustaining improvements for the health and welfare of the community residents. Beginning in 2015 the Seguin Rotary Club has been involved with the Comunitario by assisting with grants in support of purchasing pharmaceuticals, medical examination rooms, solar panel installations, urine analyzers, ear scopes, potable water distribution, and most recently the installation of a reverse osmosis water purification plant capable of producing 500 garaphones per day along with a distribution mechanism for this highly needed clean water. The most recent grant was for providing a community toilet, both female and male facilities along with children's toilets and urinals with changing tables. The Seguin Rotary Club not only supports the Comunitario with grants, but also sends a minimum of two club members to the Comunitario each year to physically help out and perform an audit of the progress being made for reporting purposes. The Seguin Rotary Club has also recognized the great benefit of the District 5840 Matching Grant program. Several have applied for and received several in support of the Tepehua Centro Comunitario.
