As we approach World Polio Day on October 24th, let’s take a moment to reflect on Rotary’s long-standing commitment to eradicating polio. This day is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and how critical it is to sustain our efforts until we reach our goal of a polio-free world. Every contribution, whether through advocacy, awareness, or financial support, brings us closer to ending polio once and for all.
World Polio Day is a time for Rotary members, public health advocates, and all who want a world free from polio to come together, recognize our progress in the fight to end polio, and talk about the actions we need to take in order to end polio for good. The event has grown every year, and now, Morgan's Wonderland is offering an expanded Halloween celebration every weekend, beginning on September 27th, culminating with our traditional "District 5840 More Delightful Than Frightful" event on Halloween.

As many of you know, San Antonio hosted the Zone 25B & 29 Institute this past weekend at the beautiful Downtown Marriott Riverwalk. We had leaders from 7 Districts in Zone 25B and 16 Districts in Zone 29 ready to learn and share ideas. Everyone had nothing but great things to say about our D5840 Hospitality and our city of San Antonio. But the most exciting thing to tell you is that out of the 7 Districts in Zone 25B, our District 5840 won Best In District Overall and Best in District for Foundation! We also received the following awards:

The Texas State University Rotaract Club was present at a Student Organization Fair on campus September 5. Rotaract students helped San Marcos Rotary pack school supplies August 30, and plan to help again October 19 packing meals for Rise Against Hunger.
The Rotary Club of Cd. Acuña and the Del Rio Rotary Club provided backpacks filled with various school supplies which were distributed to several elementary schools in Cd. Acuña. Boerne Sunrise Rotary Club also donated some laptops.
This month the current and past District 5840 Governors joined over 75 people to celebrate the impact of our past Centennial Governor, John Peterson. John joined the Rotary Club of Boerne in 1994 and was the Rotarian of the Year in 1997.
Junction Rotary ask local business to advertise for our Fall Sports Programs and we keep the money for we receive to place their ad in the program. We pay with those proceeds the cost to make the programs but then we donate the programs to Junction ISD and they give to one of their Clubs to sell at football games and all proceeds they make from selling the programs are kept by the Junction ISD club that sells them. They keep 100% of the money made from selling the programs.
The vehicle purchased by the Rotary Club of Boerne last month was part of a caravan of vehicles that recently arrived in Ukraine. The Rotary vehicle was filled with medical equipment.
On September 11, Rotarians from Fredericksburg's three clubs met at the Fredericksburg Elementary School to share Four Way Test coloring books and crayons with third grade students. The Rotarians read stories from the coloring books that depicted children in situations involving the elements of the Four Way Test, then engaged in discussions with the students.
On Thursday, September 19th at Fairy Tale Books the Jourdanton Interact Club had their first meeting of the school year to organize service projects for the year, finalize plans on their window service project at the Jourdanton Senior Citizens Center, and gear up for homecoming!
Rotary District 5840 Assistant Governor (Area #10) Ron Hubbard, presents the Rotary Citation to Fair Oaks Ranch Club President Mary Thompson in recognition of the club achieving 100% of its pledged goals for the 2023-2024 year.
The Rotary Club of San Antonio Pearl volunteered to help build a walking path designed by Gardopia Gardens for Towne Twin Village. This walking path will be a part of a quiet garden for the residents of Towne Twin Village.
Members of the Rotary Club of New Braunfels recently spent a Saturday morning volunteering at the Comal County ReStore, operated by Comal County Habitat for Humanity. They moved and sorted donated merchandise, got dirty, got sweaty, and helped make a difference towards Habitat for Humanity's mission and purpose.
The Rotary Club of Fair Oaks Ranch helped their neighbors safely dispose of paint, fertilizer and motor oil at a recent Hazardous Waste Collection event. The chemicals will be incinerated or recycled. Our club facilitated the event by directing traffic for 267 vehicles.

Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Blanco County helped Blanco Methodist Church members stuff and prepare 200 backpacks for orphans and migrants in Mexico supporting HOPE (Helping Overcome Poverty Everywhere) Ministry. The backpacks contained hygiene kits and hair accessories, socks, hats, shirts, stuffed animals/toys, coloring books, paper, pencils and erasers.
With the help of Schreiner University we were able to package 15,000 meals for rise against hunger. There were also over a dozen interact students who showed up to help. It was a great event with that is always so much fun to put on.
The Rotary Club of Del Rio was thrilled to support this impactful project by the Del Rio Parks Foundation! Thank you for allowing us to help better our community!
District Governor Kristen Salazar is challenging all Clubs to donate online to Polio Plus on Oct. 24, 2023. Club who have 100% members donating at least $25 will receive $1000 in points/dollars from the District. See document that provides steps on how to donate to Polio Plus. Again - must be done on Oct. 24th and online to count for the District Fundraiser.

The Rotary Club of San Antonio West invites Rotarians from District 5840 to join in the Annual Alzheimer’s Walk in support of Freedom House, the memory care center on the Blue Skies of Texas-West campus. The event is Saturday, Oct 19, 2024.
Five members of the Rotary Club of Seminole Lake, Florida, hiked Spain’s Camino de Santiago raised about $7,000 to raise funds to help Ukrainian refugee mothers and children in the Tampa Bay area. It also brought the entire club closer together.
