General guidelines:

Print media - Send a news release.
Radio - send a 30 second PSA and a news release as a backgrounder.
TV - send a media advisory and a news release. The media advisory is an invitation basically. It is also recommended to include video or photos from a past similar event. With TV you want to emphasize what is visual -- good television -- about the event.
